Contract: Full-time, Fixed-Term Contract (12 months)

About Us

Various Artists Limited (VAL) is a multi-BAFTA, Emmy and RTS award-winning production company known for creating distinctive scripted drama and comedy.  We launched in 2017 as an ambitious and collaborative boutique outfit, and we continue to expand our slate with both streamers and broadcasters.  Our much-beloved series so far include Sally4Ever (Sky/HBO), Juice S1 & 2 (BBC3), Still Up (Apple), Such Brave Girls S1 & 2 (BBC/Hulu) and I May Destroy You (BBC/ HBO), which has remained one of the most talked about shows of recent times.  Our 8-part drama series, Two Weeks in August, is the most-watched original drama on BBC iPlayer, four weeks into its launch, and gathering widespread critical and public acclaim. We are in production on three new, exciting, original shows this year - including Michaela Coel’s next venture, First Day on Earth, for the BBC and HBO in association with A24.

 

The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly organised Development Assistant to join our Drama team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build their career in scripted television development.

 

The successful candidate will provide administrative and creative support on our busy slate of projects. We would also hope to provide an opportunity to progress to an Assistant Script Editor role if a relevant project is greenlit during the contract.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Taking written notes in writers' rooms and editorial meetings and undertaking factual research as required.

  • Conducting research into writers, rights availability, current affairs and potential source material.

  • Producing concise coverage on scripts, books and other IP.

  • Preparing pitch documents and supporting materials.

  • Helping to identify new talent through attending the theatre and industry events.

  • Coordinating submissions, meetings and internal development processes.

 

Essential Skills and Experience

  • A demonstrable passion for television drama and storytelling and a knowledge of UK broadcasters and streaming platforms

  • Proven experience in scripted television at Development Assistant, Co-ordinator, Researcher or Assistant Script Editor level

  • Familiarity with script development processes

  • Excellent written English and strong analytical skills

  • Ability to write clear and concise script reports

  • Exceptional organisational skills and attention to detail

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to prioritise workload and work effectively under pressure

  • Proficiency in Final Draft, Microsoft Office and Adobe
